Industrial Copper-Nickel Tubing

Industrial Copper-Nickel Tubing

Copper-nickel alloy tubes (commonly available in 90/10 and 70/30 grades) are α-single-phase solid-solution copper alloys that are resistant to seawater and chloride corrosion. They offer excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and erosion corrosion, as well as resistance to marine biofouling. With good thermal conductivity and ease of welding and bending, they are widely used in ship cooling systems, heat exchangers, seawater desalination, and petrochemical piping. The products comply with the ASTM B111 standard and are available in a variety of specifications, including U-bends.

Core Industrial Advantages

I. Exceptional Corrosion Resistance

It forms a self-healing protective film in situ in seawater and chloride-containing media, effectively resisting uniform corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, and is suitable for harsh industrial environments with high flow rates and high salt fog exposure.

II. Resistance to Biofouling and Erosion

It naturally inhibits marine biofouling, reducing pipeline blockages and maintenance frequency; at the same time, it withstands high-velocity erosion, making it particularly suitable for dynamic operating conditions such as condensers and cooling systems.

III. Excellent Processing and Joining Properties

It possesses good cold and hot forming properties, is easy to bend, weld, and braze, and can be fabricated into complex shapes such as U-bends and coiled tubes to meet the diverse installation requirements of industrial equipment.

IV. Combines Thermal Conductivity with Long Service Life

Retains the high thermal conductivity of the copper matrix to ensure efficient heat transfer; with a long design life (up to 30 years or more in seawater environments), it significantly enhances the reliability and operational continuity of industrial equipment.

Classification by Material Grade

This is the most fundamental classification method, based primarily on the content of nickel and other elements in the alloy.

90/10 Copper-Nickel Alloy (B10 / UNS C70600): Containing approximately 10% nickel, this is the most widely used grade and offers the best value for money. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, and resistance to biofouling, it is the primary material used in seawater piping and heat exchangers.

70/30 Copper-Nickel Alloy (B30 / UNS C71500): Contains approximately 30% nickel. It offers higher strength and greater resistance to erosion caused by high-velocity seawater, making it suitable for more demanding operating conditions.

Other high-performance grades: Developed to meet specific requirements, such as C70620/C71520 for improved weldability, C71640 for erosion resistance, as well as chromium-containing C72200 and high-strength C72400.

Classification by Manufacturing Process

Based on the forming method, tubes are primarily divided into two categories.

Seamless Tubes: These have no weld seams, offer high-pressure-bearing capacity, and are suitable for high-pressure applications and scenarios with stringent safety requirements (such as naval vessels and nuclear power plants).

Welded Tubes: These have weld seams, are relatively lower in cost, and are suitable for general engineering applications.

Classification by Application Area

Different applications have different performance requirements for tubing, which has led to the development of specialized tubing.

Tubing for ships and offshore engineering: Used in seawater cooling, ballast, fire protection, and other systems.

Tubing for heat exchange and condensation: Used in equipment such as condensers and oil coolers in power plants and chemical plants.

Tubing for seawater desalination: Used in heat exchangers for systems such as multi-stage flash (MSF) units.

Pipes for Petrochemical Applications: Used to transport corrosive fluids.

Classification by Size and Specifications

Industrial copper-nickel pipes come in a wide range of sizes, covering everything from small heat exchanger tubes to large-diameter pipelines.

Small-Diameter Pipes: Outer diameters typically range from 6.35 mm to 54.0 mm; commonly used in heat exchanger tube bundles.

Medium-diameter tubes: Outer diameters can reach up to 152.4 mm (6 inches); these are the most widely used.

Large-diameter tubes: Outer diameters range from 219 mm to 610 mm, and can even exceed 508 mm (20 inches); these are primarily used for main pipelines in ships and offshore engineering.
